This is “Weekend at Uribe’s house 1” by Robert Frank, another one of those sheet contact prints, full of tiny frames. Look at those strips, each a little narrative, a quick burst of time recorded on film. I can imagine Frank’s eye darting around, always searching, framing reality in those little rectangles, trying to find that something true. The top strips are portraits, posed, even cinematic, but lower down...what is going on there? Tables laden with objects, half eaten meals, what feel like the remnants of a party. What was Frank thinking as he clicked the shutter? Was he trying to capture a feeling, a mood, or just the chaos of life unfolding? There is a kind of intimacy here, a sense of being right there with him in the moment, witnessing something real. Frank’s work has a raw, honest quality, a gritty beauty. It reminds me of other photographers who weren't afraid to get close and personal, like Nan Goldin or Diane Arbus. They all teach us to find beauty and meaning in the everyday, in the fleeting moments that make up a life.
