Editor: So, this photograph, "Portret van een jonge man in kostuum met degen, aangeduid als N.A. de Joncheere," by Jan Goedeljee, probably taken between 1860 and 1905, it’s got such a theatrical feel to it. He’s just standing there so proudly in this costume…What jumps out at you when you see this portrait? Curator: It's interesting, isn't it? I’m immediately drawn to the artificiality of it all. It whispers stories of historical role-play, maybe a masquerade frozen in time. And, beyond the velvet and lace, there’s this sense of performance, as though this young man, whomever he was, is both embracing and questioning the character he’s portraying. What do you think about the fact that he is in costume? Do you think that is a clear reflection of himself? Editor: Well, that's precisely what I'm wrestling with. Is it a glimpse into his personality or merely a façade? The sword and elaborate clothing signal status, maybe aspiration? But, I find myself wondering what exists beyond the external display? Curator: Exactly! Think about the gaze itself, so direct yet… almost hesitant. He's revealing something, even if it's simply the conscious act of posing. These early portraits, with their long exposure times, captured more than just a likeness, right? There's almost a haunting, like echoes in sepia. And it certainly triggers your curiosity about a time capsule, you feel transported, but there is so much silence in it. Don’t you think? Editor: It really does! It makes you want to know the silent stories the image is holding. I guess, looking at it this way, it becomes something more meaningful than a mere portrait of a man in costume. Curator: Precisely! Each photograph then is, really, a dialogue across time.
