This woman's head band was made by Sema Naga. You can see it today at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. I’m thinking about how this head band came into being, shifting and emerging through weaving, and trial, error, and intuition. I can imagine the artist Sema Naga planning out the intricate red and yellow zigzags that adorn it. Did she first make a sketch, or dive right into the making? Was she trying to make something perfect? And what kind of a ‘head space’ must she be in? It seems the materiality of the head band is front and center. Look at the tiny tassels and how they're placed at regular intervals to create a rhythmic visual pattern. What might that rhythm say, or communicate? I can feel the artist's focused attention. These choices shape our experience and contribute to the emotional and intellectual resonances of the piece. Artists are in an ongoing conversation across time, inspiring one another’s creativity. This band strikes me as an expression which embraces ambiguity, allowing for multiple interpretations.
