This woman's headband was made by Sema Naga people. The woven band, with its geometric pattern of ochre and red, it makes you think about how the process of making something can be just as important as the finished thing. It is the same as painting, in a way. When you look closer, you can see all these tiny details – the way the fibers are woven together, the little tassels, the texture of the materials. It is so cool how all these little bits come together to make something bigger. It reminds me of a Sheila Hicks weaving, with all those different textures and colors. The headband is like a conversation between different materials. It feels like there is so much history and meaning packed into this one little object. It also makes you think about how art is like an ongoing conversation, with artists borrowing and riffing off each other's ideas across time.
