Robert Frank’s ‘Cemetery 2’ is a gelatin silver print, a collection of frames, all edges, all dark and light. Frank’s rough and ready style makes me think about process, about how, for artists, the doing of it is as important as the thing itself. He's not hiding anything here; it's like a sketchbook page, raw and full of experiments. Look closely, and you’ll see there’s more than just straightforward shots. Frames are repeated, inverted, blurred. He captures not just the stillness of the cemetery but the movement, the life around it. The blur of a passing car or the gathering of people in a space of mourning. The black edging of the film strip, the dust, the scratches - all become part of the story. Like the work of Garry Winogrand, Frank's photographs speak of life as it's lived, messy, ambiguous, and always moving.
