Sue Coe’s drawing, titled “Factory,” uses stark black and white to depict the grim reality of factory farming. Coe’s work often confronts social injustice and animal rights issues. The piece is a visceral reaction to the industrialized food system. In “Factory,” masses of animals are crammed into a mechanical system, stripped of their individuality, and reduced to mere components. The gears and machinery dwarf the creatures, emphasizing their powerlessness. Coe’s work is infused with personal conviction. As she notes, the factory farm “harms the green environs, it kills the future too, the factory farm is doing harm to them, to me, to you." The illustration serves as a form of protest, challenging the viewer to confront the ethical implications of our dietary choices and the environmental impact of these large-scale operations. Coe invites us to witness what is often hidden. To bear witness to the suffering that fuels our consumption.
