CONTRACT 

Curator: Let’s turn our attention to Yoko d’Holbachie's mixed-media artwork entitled, “CONTRACT.” Editor: Well, hello there, cryptic night creature! Immediately, I'm drawn into the mesmerizing eyes – plural. It’s got this bizarre beauty; kind of dark, whimsical…a psychedelic dreamscape, if you will. Curator: D'Holbachie's process involves layering different materials, playing with realism against fields of pure fantasy, which makes me think about our current world in constant negotiation between natural and artificial, real and simulation. What kind of negotiation are we seeing here? Editor: Definitely something deeper than just surface value, like a transaction occurring. Is that hand holding a key offering salvation? Or the instrument of our potential downfall? It’s kind of hard to tell, floating there with its snail accent. The artist is definitely playing with symbols…it’s almost overwhelming but oddly captivating. Curator: Precisely, this sensory experience of "abundance" and "loss," where the accumulation of goods and materials mirrors their depletion is critical to how D’Holbachie sets up a dialogue about production and consumption and what might appear "hidden" and therefore not a subject of inquiry in a typical transaction or exchange. I'm struck by the surreal details and, indeed, its critical gaze at these unspoken deals. Editor: Yes! This piece does more than just look; it practically invites us to renegotiate our assumptions and look past that colorful haze, those swirling hypnotic figures. What is agreed upon but is, in essence, invisible? Maybe a commentary on promises and their slippery nature? Curator: Precisely. By creating these almost haunting, visually engaging images, d’Holbachie invites us to consider what is at stake when everything feels up for sale. It is no small task!
