Johanna Fosie made this landscape drawing with a graphite pencil sometime in the mid-18th century. The resulting fine lines offer a glimpse into a scene that evokes both the grandeur of nature and the everyday lives of those who inhabit it. Graphite, at the time, was becoming more readily available, largely thanks to industrialization. Here, the artist uses the pencil to build up the composition, and add depth through delicate strokes and shading, capturing the rough texture of the rocks, the flowing water, and the lush vegetation. In the foreground, the artist directs our attention to the figure of a woman doing laundry. Her presence suggests a connection to the land and the labor required to sustain daily life.
