Bartolomeo Biscaino created this print, Susanna and the Elders, using etching, a printmaking technique. The image begins with a metal plate, likely copper or zinc. The surface is coated with a waxy, acid-resistant substance called a ground. The artist then scratches into the ground with a needle, exposing the metal underneath. When the plate is immersed in acid, the exposed lines are ‘bitten,’ creating grooves. Ink is then applied to the plate, filling these grooves, and the surface is wiped clean. Finally, the plate is pressed onto paper, transferring the ink and creating the print. This etching process allowed for the relatively quick production of multiple images, making art more accessible to a wider audience beyond unique paintings or sculptures. The fine lines and detailed shading achieved through etching allowed Biscaino to convey a sense of drama and intimacy in this biblical scene, making it a powerful commentary on morality and power.
