Curator: Before us, we have Jeremy Deller's sprawling mind map, aptly titled "The History of the World". Editor: My initial thought? It's a visual symphony, a complex network linking two very different British musical genres: Acid House and Brass Bands. I can almost hear the contrasting rhythms battling it out. Curator: Precisely. Note how Deller uses hand-drawn lines to connect disparate cultural phenomena, hinting at the subtle socio-political threads that link these musical forms. Editor: Absolutely! It's all there—the Miners' Strike, deindustrialization, even advanced capitalism. Deller is making the case for a connection, a commentary on Thatcher's Britain maybe? Curator: One can interpret the work as a type of structural equation modeling, where nodes such as "Acid House" and "Brass Bands" are connected based on their relative correlation across a series of covariates. Editor: Perhaps. For me, it's a bold, imaginative gesture, weaving together seemingly unrelated elements into a coherent narrative. It is so cool. Curator: A fascinating glimpse into the artist's unique way of seeing the world. Editor: Absolutely, a provocative prompt to explore how history resonates in unexpected cultural forms.

The History of the World takes the form of a flow diagram hand painted on to the wall. It shows the social, political and musical connections between acid house and brass band music. Deller says ‘It was about Britain and British history in the 20th century and how the country had changed from being industrial to post-industrial.’ Deller’s work is often rooted in collaboration and engagement with people from outside the art world. This diagram provides the visual rationale for Deller’s Acid Brass 1996 in which acid house music was arranged for and performed by a colliery brass band. Gallery label, July 2017
