"Portrait of the Family of Adrianus Bonebakker with Dirk L. Bennewitz" is an oil painting by Adriaan de Lelie, completed in 1809. The painting depicts the Bonebakker family, including Adrianus and his wife, their children, and Dirk L. Bennewitz, a family friend. The scene takes place in a well-appointed room, with a maid serving refreshments in the background. The composition is structured around the family members, who are arranged in a relaxed yet formal manner, showcasing the affluence of the family. The painting is considered an example of Dutch Realism, highlighting everyday domestic life and the importance of family in Dutch society. It is currently on display at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
Comments
Around 1810, Bonebakker and Bennewitz were the leading Amsterdam silversmiths. De Lelie portrayed both men in a domestic setting with Bonebakker’s wife, his five daughters and his only son. The family is drinking tea, presumably in their house on the corner of the Herengracht and the Reguliersgracht. Bennewitz holds a so-called chestnut vase, similar to the ones in the display case in this gallery.
