Curator: Johan Zoffany's painting, "Colonel Blair with his Family and an Indian Ayah," presents a formal family portrait, yet there's an immediate sense of unease. Editor: Yes, the composition feels off. The subjects seem disconnected, almost staged, and the inclusion of the ayah as a background element is deeply troubling. Curator: It speaks volumes about the colonial gaze and the power dynamics at play. The family's wealth is subtly displayed through clothing and setting, while the ayah, draped in red, serves as an exotic marker of status. Editor: And the paintings within the painting add layers of context. The landscapes idealize a tamed, controlled vision of India, a stark contrast to the realities of British rule and its impact on indigenous populations. Curator: Precisely. It's a powerful, if unsettling, visual document of a particular moment in history, one that requires us to confront uncomfortable truths about empire, identity, and representation. Editor: Absolutely, this forces us to reflect on how art can reinforce, but also challenge, the social and political structures of its time.

Colonel Blair served in the Bengal army in colonial India. He sits in the centre of this painting in a lavish interior setting alongside his wife and daughters. On the right, a young Indian girl holds a cat. Her identity and relationship to the family remains unknown. It is possible she is an ayah (a housemaid), or perhaps Blair’s child. The child is positioned as an outsider welcomed into the group, echoing colonial sentiment in the British Empire. The paintings on the wall intentionally portray Indian customs as both captivating and outside British ideas of civilisation. Gallery label, April 2023
