Reijer Stolk made this poster for the Fokker monoplane with brush and ink, giving us some idea of its...great maneuverability! I love the urgency of these marks! The planes themselves, with their olive-green wings, are angular and feel like they're about to take off, while the buttery yellow sky just vibrates with energy, like the world’s about to change. I can imagine Stolk, brush in hand, trying to capture the feeling of speed, the thrill of flight and new technologies! The artist’s process feels so close here: each stroke of ink is visible. You can see the slight imperfections and wobbles in the lines, which gives the piece so much life! I wonder if he was thinking about other commercial painters, like Cassandre, who were also trying to capture the feeling of dynamism and speed. There’s a real conversation between artists across time! A process which embraces change, allows for different interpretations, and gives new meaning, don't you think?
