Christoffel van Sichem II created this woodcut, "Paulus voor Festus en Agrippa," in the 17th century. Sichem was working in a Netherlands experiencing the height of the Dutch Golden Age, a period marked by immense economic prosperity, artistic flourishing, and also intense religious and political conflict. This image depicts a scene from the New Testament, Paul's defense before the Roman governor Festus and King Agrippa. What strikes me is the way Sichem visualizes power and marginalization. Agrippa sits enthroned, embodying authority, while Paul stands before him, a figure of defiance amidst armed guards. Consider the emotional weight of this encounter. Paul, a Jew and an early Christian, stands accused before the Roman Empire. The woodcut captures the tension inherent in this clash of cultures, beliefs, and power structures. As you look at it, think about the courage it must have taken to stand up for one's beliefs in the face of overwhelming opposition.
