Curatorial notes

This etching, *Oude vrouw met takkenbos*, shows an old woman in a barren landscape, created by Petrus van der Velden. The artist's mark-making is about capturing the texture of the woman's clothing and the rough terrain. It’s all achieved through these incredibly delicate lines, almost like whispers on paper. Looking closely, you can see the way the light catches the fabric of her dress. Van der Velden really emphasizes the physicality of the medium. The surface of the print feels almost palpable. Check out the way the lines create a sense of depth, especially around her feet where she meets the ground. It’s not just a representation, it’s about the feel of the earth underfoot, the weight of her burdens. You know, looking at this print makes me think of Paula Modersohn-Becker. Both artists share a way of honoring the everyday, the struggles and triumphs of ordinary folks. Art is just an ongoing conversation, right? We're all just riffing off each other, trying to make sense of the world in our own way.
