This small ‘textile’ was made by an anonymous artist, and it's easy to imagine how it came into being, slowly, methodically, square by square. I sympathize with the artist, who might have been thinking about craft and pattern-making, maybe even the grid. What's fascinating is how these little marks construct a site of inquiry. It offers a way of seeing the world through the lens of material and process. You can almost feel the artist's hand at work, building up the surface with those little squares. The grid itself is not colored in, and it's this underlying structure which makes the red and blue 'woven' blocks seem all the more intriguing, as if the artist is questioning our ideas around color, texture, and form, offering a multitude of possible readings. Like all artists, the maker of this textile participates in an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time, inspiring creativity through ambiguity and uncertainty.
