This picture, Nieuw bivak te Blangrakal, it’s hard to know exactly when it was made, or who made it, but let’s imagine the maker, somewhere far away, patiently setting up their camera to make this evocative image of a field of grass. It looks like a simple photo, but I can imagine the artist, the technician, who made this was thinking, what does it mean to mark a territory? What does it mean to try to document this landscape, and maybe control it? There is a powerful contrast between the seemingly endless field of grass in the foreground and the men and horses trailing into the distance. This tension is palpable and leads me to ask, what story is being told, and what details are omitted? Photography is a powerful way of seeing, thinking, and experiencing the world, but it is never neutral. It shapes our perception and understanding in complex ways.
