The Lamentation 1496 - 1499

Albrecht Dürer’s 1496-99 woodcut, "The Lamentation," is a poignant depiction of Christ's removal from the cross. The image portrays a scene of sorrow, with the Virgin Mary and other mourners gathered around the body of Christ. Dürer's masterful use of line and detail creates a sense of depth and realism. This highly detailed work is a classic example of Northern Renaissance art, and demonstrates Dürer's skill in woodcut printing.
