Harold Field Kellogg created this etching of St. Botolph's Church in Boston, England. I can almost see him, the artist, outside on location, squinting in the daylight, etching plate in hand. It feels so delicate. Look at the intricacy of the church and the softness of the clouds, all rendered in fine lines. It must have taken so much care and concentration to create this scene. The way the light catches the water and reflects on the buildings adds so much depth and atmosphere. There's a real sense of place here. It reminds me of some of Whistler’s prints of the Thames, that same interest in capturing the atmosphere and feeling of a specific location. It makes you think about how artists are always in conversation with each other, inspired and influenced by those who came before. They are finding their own way of seeing and expressing the world around them, leaving their own little mark in the history of art.
