Curatorial notes
Honoré Daumier, a French printmaker, caricaturist, painter, and sculptor, created this oil on canvas painting, entitled 'Attorney Reading.' Daumier’s artwork provides a glimpse into 19th-century French society. His critical eye often focused on the legal profession, a world of power and social stratification. Here, the anonymity of the figures suggests a critique of the legal system. The dark robes blend with the shadows, obscuring individual identities and hinting at a loss of self within the institution. Daumier's caricatures, often published in newspapers, gained him notoriety and even imprisonment. His art offers a poignant social commentary, which reflects the political and social turmoil of the time. The painting's somber tones evoke a sense of moral ambiguity. As we contemplate 'Attorney Reading', we are left to consider the role of law, justice, and individual conscience.
