Water by Etienne Baudet

Curator: Looking at "Water" by Etienne Baudet, it feels like a dream I once had after eating too much cheese. So many cherubs! Editor: It's interesting that you mention dreams, because allegorical depictions of the elements, like this one, often reinforce power structures. How does the element of water reflect the power dynamics of Louis le Grand’s court? Curator: Well, it is dedicated to Louis le Grand, so there's that. But beyond the dedication, I’m intrigued by the fluidity of form here, almost a visual representation of Baroque excess. Editor: Yes, excess is a good word. Consider, though, who had access to this type of imagery, and what was being communicated about their place in the world versus those who were excluded. Curator: True. I get so caught up in the swirling lines and the chubby cherubs; it’s easy to forget the intended audience. Editor: Exactly. Even in apparent fantasy, there’s always a social reality being constructed. Curator: I’ll try to keep that in mind when I encounter other works like this!
