Etienne Baudet made this print, Element Aarde, in the late 17th or early 18th century, using engraving, a process by which lines are incised into a metal plate and then printed. The medium strongly influences the appearance of this allegorical scene of earthly abundance. Through the skilled application of engraving, a great sense of depth and texture is created, particularly in the depiction of foliage and figures. This fine line work gives the scene a sense of delicate detail. Consider the labour-intensive nature of the engraving process itself, requiring immense skill, precision and time. The image speaks to the social context of its making, not only through the labour of its production, but also the labour depicted within it. Note that the image is dedicated to Louis the Great, King of France and Navarre, indicating the network of patronage and power at play. Paying attention to materials and making allows us to see how artistic practices reflect and shape social and cultural values.
