Jacob Houbraken made this red chalk drawing, depicting his father Arnold, in the 18th century. At this time, the Dutch Republic was a leading center for art and culture, but it also had a rigid class structure where access to education and artistic training was often determined by social standing. While portraiture of prominent figures was common, this intimate sketch offers a different lens. Jacob, son of the more famous Arnold, reverses the power dynamic through this drawing. The gaze is soft, almost melancholic, giving us an insight into the sitter’s personality. Houbraken’s choice to portray his father in such a vulnerable state challenges the traditional heroic representations often seen in formal portraiture of the time. Instead, we get a softer image, a more personal statement about family and legacy.
