Robert Frank made this silver gelatin print of two boxers at an unknown date. The contrast of tones feels so immediate. I mean, look at how the light falls, creating such deep shadows around the eyes of the figure on the left. Frank's method of printing really heightens the contrast and exaggerates the grain. This isn't just a document; it's a deliberate, emotional statement. The texture almost hurts - and how does this reflect the intense physicality of these men? Frank was influenced by the social commentary of the Photo League in New York. But here, he takes the photo out of any narrative context and just focusses on the expression and the moment. You could compare it to Weegee's raw, urban photos, but Frank's work is somehow more intimate, less about the event, and more about the human condition. It is not always easy to look at, but it is always thought provoking.
