Weegee made this photograph, “Shorty, the Bowery Cherub, New Year's Eve at Sammy's Bar” sometime around 1943. I love the movement and the grittiness of the dark tones. It feels like a party—but what kind of party? I imagine Weegee staking out Sammy’s Bar on New Year's Eve, maybe feeling the desperation to capture something real amidst the artificial cheer. He finds Shorty, a small figure with a big presence, a paper hat perched on his head, a glass raised in a toast. It’s like Weegee’s saying, “Here’s the heart of it all." Think about how the flash freezes Shorty, but also throws the background into shadow, making the other partygoers almost ghostly. It's the kind of choice that gives photography its real power. Weegee is creating a space for an intimate, and perhaps slightly melancholic, kind of seeing. It’s about feeling the pulse of a city, catching those fleeting moments that reveal something deeper. You know?
