This vase was made by the Fulper Pottery Company sometime between 1860 and 1955. It's a striking piece, isn't it? I can imagine the potter in their studio, carefully applying the glaze, watching as the colors shifted and blended in the kiln. The blue on top is so deep and calming. It seems to cascade into the green below, like a waterfall meeting a lush forest. I bet the potter was thinking about the natural world while making this vase. The way the colors blend reminds me of a landscape painting, with its gentle gradations and harmonious palette. Maybe they were inspired by the Hudson River School painters, those romantics who captured the sublime beauty of the American wilderness. It's like they wanted to bring a little bit of that wildness into the home, a reminder of the beauty and wonder that surrounds us. This vase is part of a larger story of artists borrowing and building upon each other's ideas, remixing the past to create something new.
