Corbinian Saur created this print with an oval border in the 17th century. Note the prominent oval, a shape that dates back to ancient times, symbolizing wholeness, the cyclical nature of existence, and even, in some contexts, the feminine principle. Observe how the oval is decorated. The botanical motifs entwined around it echo those found in ancient Roman frescoes, a nod to nature's regenerative power. Yet, there's a twist. The addition of stylized geometric patterns introduces a tension, a push and pull between the organic and the structured. The oval shape reminds me of Renaissance cartouches framing emperors' portraits. The oval returns in Baroque architecture with Bernini. Here, it becomes an object of adornment. The oval's endurance speaks to our deep-seated need for order, safety, and a connection to something beyond ourselves. These symbols speak across time, evoking feelings that resonate with our collective unconscious. They have become a powerful force, engaging viewers on a deep, subconscious level, evoking awe, wonder, and a sense of continuity.
