Zygmunt Waliszewski made this painting, 'Flowers and Fruit,' with oils, and I see a lot of sky blue in the background, some potted plants, fruit, and flowers, and a table full of stuff. I imagine him setting up this still life, arranging the objects just so, and then diving into the act of painting itself. You know, sometimes, when I'm working on a piece, I get so lost in the process that the outside world just melts away. I wonder if Waliszewski felt something similar as he built up these layers of color and texture, pushing and pulling at the forms until they felt just right. Look at how he’s rendered those flowers in the vase – each stroke is so deliberate, yet there's this wonderful sense of freedom and spontaneity, a joy for mark-making. I think he was likely inspired by the Impressionists, or maybe even Van Gogh, who knew a thing or two about painting flowers. Artists are constantly in conversation with one another across time, riffing on each other's ideas, and pushing the boundaries of what painting can be. For Waliszewski, painting became a way of seeing, thinking, and feeling his way through the world.
