Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst designed this window for the North Transept in the Dom Church, Utrecht, using paint and pencil. I love thinking about the preliminary sketches for stained glass. It's so exciting to see how the artist’s hand guides the design, translating the ethereal qualities of light into tangible marks on paper. It's as if the artist is wrestling with the divine, trying to capture a fleeting moment of inspiration. Looking at the composition, I can sense the artist’s struggle to balance tradition with his unique vision. And how does the painting itself become a site of inquiry? It’s almost like each brushstroke is a question, a probe into the nature of light, color, and form. Holst lays down these marks, and the viewer can participate in that search. And that’s the beauty of art.
