This design for a window in the Amsterdam Lyceum was made by Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst with chalk and crayon, and probably a prayer. You can see the marks shifting, emerging through trial, error, and intuition. It is like he is asking: How can I bring together this figure, this architectural space, this light? I bet Holst was thinking about medieval stained glass windows and the way they tell stories, and how the light comes through, how that changes everything. I sympathize with him; the guy is standing there with a big stick and a funny hat. Is he a soldier, a student, a dreamer? The chalk and crayon are smudgy, the colors are muted, but they also have a certain vibrancy. The surface is very physical. And each gesture can communicate feeling, intention, or meaning. It's a conversation across time, inspiring creativity, and maybe even illuminating a new way of seeing.
