Childe Hassam created this pen and ink drawing called "Norman Structure" at the turn of the 20th century. The image depicts what appears to be a Medieval castle and evokes a sense of historical grandeur through its architectural style. The choice of subject matter invites us to consider Hassam's relationship to European history and culture at a time when many American artists were drawn to Europe for inspiration. The drawing's emphasis on the castle’s imposing façade suggests an interest in the visual codes of power and authority associated with the medieval period. It's a visual representation of social hierarchy. By studying Hassam's biography, letters, and other period documents, we can gain a deeper understanding of the cultural values that shaped his artistic vision. We can better reflect on how these historical structures persist within our society.
