Editor: Here we have "The Circumcision," a wooden carving from the mid-16th century by Jan van Velthoven. The scene is immediately striking, incredibly detailed with so much attention given to the figures' drapery and expressions. What pulls you in when you look at this piece? Curator: Well, right away, I’m drawn to the emotional restraint in everyone's face but, and it’s a big BUT, it hides this sort of dramatic intensity simmering just beneath the surface. I imagine, back when it was originally made, how would a 16th century audience engage with such intimate but extremely violent, bodily functions made religious theatre? Editor: Violent? I mean, it’s delicate… Curator: Ah, but it is that violence that makes it unforgettable! You have to imagine yourself a bit into the role of the child… the only fully naked person… held between giants, cold blades above you, then tell me again, does it still feel delicate? This very personal ritual is captured in this static monument. Do you see how the sculptor somehow brings motion into stillness? Editor: That’s really fascinating, I didn't consider the role of the child but it does flip the image’s energy, making it much more lively! And I see how each face kind of contains their own world while still adding to the energy of this holy gathering. The contrast is really engaging. Curator: Absolutely, and I bet back then you’d place that statue inside of the Church or even take it with you for travels! Imagine contemplating the gravity of faith’s most important… *ouch*…moments carved into these lovely things…makes one question if any prayer goes unheard. Editor: Definitely provides some needed perspective…I am curious now, to seek other "moments" of art history to see which other narratives are being highlighted from other lenses…Thank you!
