Artus Quellinus created this terracotta relief, The Judgement of Solomon, as a model for Amsterdam’s Town Hall. At its heart lies the potent symbol of justice, embodied by Solomon, whose wisdom is legendary. Note the executioner poised with sword raised, a stark image recurring throughout history, from Roman tribunals to Renaissance allegories of justice. But it is the maternal gesture here, the outstretched arm of the true mother, that truly resonates. This motif echoes through time, reminiscent of classical depictions of mercy and compassion. The wailing child, caught between life and death, is particularly evocative. One is reminded of the power that such imagery has to stir deep, subconscious memories of our own primal fears and attachments. It is this emotional resonance that allows the image to transcend its historical context, engaging us on a deeply human level. Consider how this symbol, rooted in ancient wisdom and maternal love, has resurfaced, evolved, and taken on new meanings, perpetuating across time.
