This is a portrait of Dirk Christiaan Meijer Junior by Pieter Dupont, but we don’t know exactly when it was made or with what medium, though I’d guess engraving or etching. The composition is super traditional, but the marks feel really fresh and alive. Look at all the tiny, detailed lines! It reminds me of when I'm trying to figure something out in my own work – that intense focus on each individual stroke. It's about the physicality of mark-making, about getting lost in the process itself. There's something so intimate and tender in the way Dupont captures the subject's hands. Each wrinkle and crease tells a story. It's like he's not just depicting a person, but a whole history of experience. It makes me think of Rembrandt; both artists share this incredible ability to find beauty and depth in the human form. For me, art is all about that conversation across time, this constant exchange of ideas and perspectives.
