Editor: This is "Nieuwjaarsprent van de redactie van de Nederlandsche Spectator, 1866" by Johan Michaël Schmidt Crans, made in 1865. It’s an engraving. It reminds me of a political cartoon…lots going on, but it’s hard to immediately grasp the message. What do you see in this piece? Curator: At first glance, it seems a scene from everyday life, but observe how figures are arranged. The figures in the background are set against very geometric building features and have very uniform light and shadow. Their garb and grouping indicate a type of stage—do you see that? Perhaps they represent actors or even ideals taking center stage to address society? Editor: Yes, I see that now! What about the characters in the front? The one on the right is almost clown-like. Curator: Absolutely. Clowns, fools, jesters – they’ve been employed for centuries to hold a mirror to society, exaggerating our follies so we might see them more clearly. It's a strong contrast that draws attention. Where does your eye go next? Editor: The people being wheeled in the barrow. One is lying down and the others look really tired. It suggests that 1865 has taken its toll. What are they being wheeled towards? Curator: To the foreground and towards the year 1866, it seems. The text below the figures acts like a foundation, providing meaning that goes deeper than an image might on its own. It also draws attention to the fact that all years are always on the threshold, so to speak. What is ending gives birth to what begins. Editor: The artwork serves as a cultural record but also expresses something about transitions, too. The beginning and ending idea… thanks so much for sharing your expertise! Curator: And thank you. Examining symbols together helps reveal their enduring resonance.
