Curatorial notes

Gabriel Huquier created this print, “Christ heals two blind men,” sometime in the first half of the 18th century. The print depicts a biblical scene where Jesus restores sight to two blind men, surrounded by onlookers. Huquier made this print in France, a society with a rigid social hierarchy. The Catholic church was a powerful institution whose influence permeated society and culture. Religious imagery often served to reinforce social norms and to legitimize the power of the church and the ruling classes. Yet, the stories of Jesus also spoke to the poor and downtrodden, offering hope. In this print, notice how the artist positions Jesus. The halo emphasizes his divinity while his proximity to the kneeling blind men highlights compassion. As art historians, we can study the changing role of religious imagery in 18th-century France by consulting historical documents, theological treatises, and contemporary social commentary.
