Sea with a ship 

Ivan Aivazovsky created this intense seascape with oil paints, at an unknown date. Aivazovsky, a celebrated 19th-century Russian-Armenian painter, was the son of a merchant. He spent most of his life in Crimea, a region with a complex history marked by cultural exchange and conflict between the Russian and Ottoman empires. His identity as an Armenian in the Russian Empire significantly shaped his artistic vision. The subject matter is of a ship caught in a tumultuous sea.
