This is "11th Street story 16" by Robert Frank, who passed away not so long ago, it's a series of photographs on a roll of film. I love the way the frames show us the rhythm of Frank's looking and thinking. It's like the film is his sketchbook, or his journal, and we're seeing snippets of his life and thoughts, the light and shadow playing across the images and leaving a trail of impressions. The cityscapes, children, cars, and quiet domestic scenes blend together and we start to imagine the story behind them, the story of Frank's life on 11th street, and what he was trying to capture in these images. I am reminded of the work of Garry Winogrand, another street photographer who was interested in capturing the energy and chaos of city life. Like Winogrand, Frank embraced ambiguity and chance in his work, capturing moments that feel both random and deeply meaningful. Together, these small moments compose a life and give the viewer a place to start imagining.
