This "Figured Flask" is a striking example of 19th-century American glassmaking. Created in 1824 by the Coventry Glass Works, the flask is crafted from a deep green glass and features a molded design of an eagle in flight, surrounded by stars. This bottle, currently housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, highlights the decorative skills of early American glassblowers, utilizing a technique known as "free-blown" glass, where molten glass is blown into a mold. The flask's design, a symbol of American patriotism, would have been a popular choice for holding spirits or other liquids.
