Curatorial notes

Traugott Richard captured this photograph of an unknown young woman in traditional Thurgau attire in the 19th century. During this period, traditional clothing served as a powerful symbol of cultural identity. In Switzerland, where regional customs varied considerably, these garments were a visual declaration of one's origins and allegiances. The woman's elaborate headdress, adorned with a large bow, signals her regional identity and status. But, in the studio setting and through the photographer's lens, the photograph also raises questions about representation. Is this an authentic preservation of cultural heritage, or a constructed image catering to popular tastes? What does it mean to be an anonymous subject, forever frozen in time, representing an idealized version of womanhood and Swiss identity? The woman’s gaze, though direct, hints at the complexities of the performance. As you look at her, consider the many layers of identity and representation at play, and the silent stories she carries.
