Edvard Munch created "Eye in Eye", an oil on canvas, the date of which is unknown. The painting’s composition arranges two figures facing each other, set against a landscape deeply evocative in its use of color and form. The landscape is simplified into planes of color and the figures emerge from the darkness with stark visibility. Notice how the faces are rendered: the contrast in color between the woman’s reddish face and the man’s pale visage is significant. The semiotic weight of the male figure, almost ghostly, could represent a challenge to conventional symbols of masculinity. He is juxtaposed against the female figure, who seems more grounded, her gaze intense and questioning. The tree that divides them does not so much separate them but rather frames their interaction. Munch uses a visual structure that encourages us to question the narrative and the underlying social constructs of gender and identity, so that meaning is continuously negotiated.
