This woodblock print, "‘Exile to Suma’ (Suma): Tamaori-hime," is part of the series *Scenes amid Genji Clouds Matched with Ukiyo-e Pictures* by the celebrated Japanese artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861). The print depicts Tamaori-hime, a character from the classic Japanese novel *The Tale of Genji*, standing on a rocky outcropping amidst tumultuous waves, a symbol of her exile. The dynamic composition, vibrant colors, and intricate details are characteristic of Kuniyoshi's style, which blended traditional Japanese artistic techniques with Western influences. The print was created between 1845 and 1861, a time when the popularity of ukiyo-e prints was at its peak in Japan. It's now part of the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
