Magnus Enckell made this watercolor painting, Salome, with delicate lines and washes of muted colors, layering them to create a dream-like theatrical space. The thinness of the paint allows the whiteness of the paper to shine through, creating a luminous effect, especially in the way the moon glows against the night sky. The red cloak worn by Salome, positioned on the left, is a focal point, drawing the eye through the composition. The paint is so thin here, that you can see the sketch marks underneath, these under-markings suggest a process of searching and discovery. I am reminded of Marsden Hartley's figurative work, where similar subjects are distilled to their essence through simplified forms and subdued palettes. Enckell, like Hartley, embraces ambiguity, inviting us to contemplate the complexities of human emotion and the power of suggestion in art.
