Editor: We're looking at Salman Toor's "Music Room" from 2021, made with acrylic paint. There's such a fluidity to the forms and such an array of figures scattered through this intimate scene; I get the sense of observing a clandestine moment. What strikes you most about it? Curator: For me, it’s how Toor uses the material qualities of acrylic paint itself – the thin washes and layering – to build this sense of lived-in, almost ephemeral space. Consider how that handling of material relates to the spaces inhabited by queer brown bodies and the ways in which visibility and invisibility are constantly negotiated. Editor: So the choice of acrylic is itself significant, suggesting the perhaps impermanent or easily altered nature of those spaces? Curator: Precisely. And look closer; how does Toor depict clothing, the texture of rugs, or even the suggestion of food and drink? These material signifiers aren't just decorative; they ground the figures in a specific, contemporary reality. What does the work gain if we think of each brushstroke as an intentional addition, laboring towards its own unique history? Editor: I hadn’t considered how intentionally crafted those elements were before. I was too swept away by the narrative. Curator: Think about the choices an artist makes when representing contemporary culture. From the canvas, to the color palette, and all of its social implications. Editor: This has broadened my perception of contemporary art. I'm going to think much more about materials and labor moving forward! Curator: Excellent. Let’s dig a little deeper at our next work.
