Daniel Dezeuze created this untitled artwork using beads and paint on what appears to be a section of plastic mesh. Dezeuze was a member of the Supports/Surfaces group in France during the late 1960s and early 70s. This collective questioned the fundamental conventions of painting. They sought to strip painting down to its basic elements, such as the canvas, stretcher, and pigment, often removing the canvas from its frame altogether. Dezeuze's use of non-traditional materials and his emphasis on the objecthood of the artwork are characteristic of this movement. France in the late 60s was a time of political and social upheaval, and Supports/Surfaces was part of a broader critique of established institutions and artistic norms. Dezeuze's work, while abstract, can be seen as a commentary on the commercialization and commodification of art.
