This is G-P. Joumard’s 1925 fashion plate, made with print on paper. The rendering is so flat, so graphic, that the pinks and blacks really pop against the cream colored paper. It’s like the paper is another color in the palette. Look at the outfit on the left; the checked jacket is such a playful pattern. The artist doesn’t fully enclose each little square, leaving a little white space around each one. It’s this little detail that gives it such a wonderful, whimsical feel. It feels like the work of someone who is really enjoying the process of artmaking. That kind of loose treatment reminds me of Matisse and his paper cut-outs, but Joumard is making something new here, something all their own. In art, it's always about building on what came before, and then twisting it around to make something new. Art is an ongoing conversation, not a set of rules.
