René Magritte made "The voice of space" in oil on canvas, and what strikes me is that he’s taken his time to blend the colours and give the spheres a realistic sense of volume. They seem to glow, with a sort of internal light. The material quality of this painting is all about smoothness. The surfaces are sleek, almost like polished metal, except for the landscape which is quite soft and hazy. Look at the black lines slicing through each sphere; they are so precise, adding a touch of unease to the whole scene. It is like a zipper mouth, unable to speak. I feel like the longer you look, the more the image feels strange and unknowable. I am reminded of Giorgio de Chirico, who explored similar dreamscapes in his paintings, creating a world that feels both familiar and deeply unsettling. Magritte and de Chirico leave space for ambiguity, inviting us to lose ourselves in the mystery.
