Toyen made this painting, Objekt-fantom, with oil, using thin layers of paint that let the underpainting peek through. The color palette, with its muted greens and browns, gives the whole scene an unsettling, dreamlike feel, like something just beyond our grasp. You know? The texture is smooth, almost polished, but if you look closely, you can see the brushstrokes swirling around that central, staring eye. It’s like the eye is both the subject and the object of the painting, watching us as much as we’re watching it. The way the light catches the edge of the orb, it’s hard to tell if it’s solid or something more ephemeral. Toyen reminds me of Dorothea Tanning; both artists had this knack for turning the ordinary into something surreal and deeply psychological. Ultimately, the painting embraces the ambiguity, inviting us to bring our own interpretations to the surface.
