Editor: So, this is "Christus in gesprek met Nikodemus," or "Christ speaking with Nicodemus," made in 1585 by Pieter de Jode I. It's an engraving, so ink on paper. It feels quite serious and academic. All that intense cross-hatching! What do you make of this piece? Curator: Well, right off the bat, the scene has this wonderful, almost theatrical lighting, doesn't it? Baroque drama at its finest. The single candle really focuses our attention on their faces, their expressions. Are they contemplative, confrontational... maybe both? Think about Nicodemus, a Pharisee, coming to Jesus in secret. There's already a sense of mystery, of hidden knowledge. What do you think that single light source adds to the narrative? Editor: I suppose it does add to the secret meeting feeling. It feels like this could almost be an illustration for a gothic novel. Curator: Exactly! And Jode captures it beautifully through these fine lines. Now look at their gestures. Christ's raised hand, Nicodemus' hand on his chest – it's a dialogue, but also a deep, internal struggle for Nicodemus. And you see the books on the table. That’s a Renaissance scholar’s workplace right there! Editor: I guess I hadn't thought about the gesture as struggle... interesting. All those visual cues, like the candle and the books, must have been really important to communicate the message back then. Curator: Precisely. Every line serves the narrative, and knowing a bit of context makes it all sing. It is like rediscovering a hidden language in plain sight, isn’t it? Editor: Totally. Thanks. Now I’m actually seeing this artwork completely differently. Curator: Wonderful. That is what it's all about.
