Takashi Murakami made "Eco Eco Rangers Earth Force" with silkscreen, that allows a flat evenness to its surface. Look at that bright blue background and those floating shapes. How do you even begin something like this? I imagine Murakami, surrounded by anime figures, thinking about pop art, Warhol, and maybe a bit of early Disney. This piece is so damn joyful. The whole composition is floating and dreamlike. I love the way he uses the language of cartoons but gives it an edge, so it's not saccharine. You can see this influence throughout his practice, where these shapes and colours appear again and again. A painting like this isn't just about the surface; it's about the conversation artists have with each other, across time, inspiring each other and pushing the boundaries of what painting can be. It makes you wonder, what could I make?
