Dimensions height 364 mm, width 534 mm
This is Guillaume Philidor Van den Burggraaff’s cover for prints with artist portraits. Its dimensions are 364 mm in height and 534 mm in width, and it currently resides in the Rijksmuseum. The first impression is one of muted formality. A blue-grey paper, folded in half, presents a study in contrasts. One side is largely unadorned, save for subtle variations in the paper's texture and some surface irregularities. The other is dominated by a crisply defined rectangle containing blackletter typography. The contrast between the fluid texture of the paper and the rigid lines of the rectangle sets up a visual tension. This tension is further reinforced by the semiotic contrast between the empty, abstract space and the contained, symbolic text. The typography itself evokes the early 19th century. Despite this, the cover invites us to consider how form and structure can create meaning. It's a reminder that even the simplest design choices contribute to a work's aesthetic and cultural significance.
